HIGH KEY
LOW KEY
Artist Statement
How does this relate to or differ from your previous works?
Both my high key and low key pictures differ a lot from my previous works. For this assignment I had to photograph myself which is something I usually do not do. I have someone else be my model for the subject of my photos. Also I haven't used a plan background in any of my other films/projects, so using the plain backdrop was something new. However, I really enjoyed using them because it brought out a lot of contrast as well as light and shadow. Like my other assignments I stuck to using black and white to emphasize the contrast of the photos.
How did you physically engage in the creation?
For this assignment I was the subject of the photo so I had to find a way to physically show how I viewed myself and how I think others view me. For high key I tried to show me in a relaxed, fun, and goofy way. To show that I view myself as funny or happy. It was a tad hard to physically show that was the traits I was aiming to show but after a couple tries I was able to capture my high key final photo. For my low key I had to capture a completely different look and make it a whole new theme as well. I tried for a more serious tense look as if I was angry or annoyed while the photo was being taken.
What did you learn while making it?
I learned quite a lot while I was shooting this particular assignment. I got to see what I looked like to others and why others may view me as what my low key displayed. However I got to also see how I viewed myself during this which was a very positive thing. I was very happy to learn how to take a portrait for this was the first assignment where I had to do this. I also learned how to use lighting efficiently to show a mood for that picture and the different ways to position the light to get a certain effect.
